THE ANCIENT RECEPTION OF EURIPIDES’ BACCHAE FROM ATHENS TO BYZANTIUM
DR FIACHRA MAC GÓRÁIN
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON (UCL)
ABSTRACT
Euripides’ Bacchae had a particularly rich afterlife in antiquity. This talk will establish the classic status of the play, and then consider its reception under three rubrics, while ranging across Greek and Latin literature: (i) performance (Plutarch, epigram, Tacitus), (ii) narratives (Theocritus, Ovid, Oppian, Nonnus, Malalas), and (iii) Christian discourse (Luke-Acts, Christus Patiens). The aim will be to consider what interpretation of the play is suggested by each instance of reception, and to see what each source suggests about Bacchus/Dionysus.
