THE NEW HYPERIDES ON THE ARCHIMEDES PALIMPSEST
PROFESSOR MIKE EDWARDS
OVERSEAS FELLOW OF THE ONASSIS FOUNDATION /PROFESSOR OF CLASSICS,
UNIVERSITY OF ROEHAMPTON, LONDON
ABSTRACT
In this talk, I shall start by offering an overview of the history as far as we know it of the Archimedes Palimpsest, a manuscript so called from its main contents, works by the Greek mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse. The palimpsest, however, contains other works, including fragments of two speeches by the orator Hyperides, and I shall continue by relating my role in the decipherment of the folia containing Hyperides’ speech Against Diondas. I shall conclude by making some observations on what this text tells us about the rhetorical tactics of Demosthenes and his supporters in the wake of the defeat at Chaeronea.
