UNLEASHING DESIRE IN LYSIAS 3 AND 4
ABSTRACT
Lysias 3 and 4 originate in disputes over sex slaves that culminated in physical altercations resulting in a charge of trauma ek pronoias (premeditated wounding) against which the speakers defend themselves. Taken together, the speeches offer an opportunity to consider the intersectionality of gender, slavery, and sexual labour. With these two speeches, we can explore social tensions surrounding male versus female sexual labour as well as anxiety over male desire. This paper examines the uses of desire in each speech (epithumia and duserōs respectively) to amplify the character of the disputants (both speaker and opponent) and what the characters of the sex slaves, their treatment, and the relationships with them, reveal about the tensions and anxieties surrounding sexual desire in classical Athens more generally. The paper is part of a larger project on the representation and significance of sexual labour in the Attic Orators.
